The front and back surfaces of the plate are sanded to achieve the specified thickness. Rather than surface smoothness of these plates, it is more important to achieve the thickness being consistent across all points of the plate. As a result of the calibration process, both the front and back surfaces of the plates become smooth. After this process, the thickness of the plates becomes precisely measured.
